3 Eleint. Last night the rudder of the caravel La Gallega became loose, being broken and unshipped. It was believed that this happened by the contrivance of Imprudente Rascon and Christopher Résistente, who were on board the caravel, because they disliked the voyage. The Captain says he had found them in an unfavorable disposition before setting out. He was in much anxiety at not being able to afford much assistance in this case, but says that it somewhat quieted his apprehensions to know that First Mate Dhavaer of the La Gallega, a man of courage and capacity, would handle proper disciplinary measures.
Elysara the Ship’s Carpenter was set to repair the damage as she could, while Captain de Puertos and the First Mate discussed appropriate punishment. A penance of 100 lashes, followed by a slow keelhaul, was decided. The crew was gathered at noon to witness the punishment. The First Mate gave an excellent speech concerning the need for discipline and trust in their Captain. The ship’s heathen ministers, Syberious and Lilandra, each offered a blessing for the treacherous crewmen. Joseph Melechor, recent to the Golden Legion, offered them leather bladders to aid in survival of the keelhauls.
Imprudente Rascon was stripped to the waist and prepared to take his lashing when the lookout spotted a ship in distress. We hoisted sail and moved to aid, discovering a fishing vessel under attack by merfolk. While the Captain worked to control our rudderless ship, the Golden Legion sprang to action, killing several of the merfolk leaders and rescuing two fishermen and a hired protector. Many were gravely injured in the attack, but the healing power of Helm restored them after the battle. All should survive the trek to Lantan, where we will affect ship repairs.
